Swakopmund Information
Swakopmund is situated on the west coast of Namibia, surrounded by the Namib desert and the Atlantic Ocean.
Swakopmund was founded two years later than Windhoek, in 1892, by Captain Curt von Francois as the main harbor of German South West Africa. This premier holiday resort is lovingly nicknamed “Sleeping Beauty” as it is frequently enveloped in mist.
Swakopmund is the perfect location for the visitor who wants to explore both the desert and the coast. The town can be used as a base for day excursions to the seal colony at Cape Cross, the Namib Desert with its gravel plains, the famous Dune 7, Sandwich Harbor , the Spitzkoppe, Brandberg and Twyfelfontein Rock Art treasures, the Skeleton Coast with the legendary but skittish desert elephant, the Naukluft Park and the magnificent dune formations of the Namib desert in Namibia.
Moon Landscape flanks the Swakop River Valley and it was formed over millions of years ago when the river’s thousands of tributaries incised deeply into the soft deposits laid down about 450 million years ago.
The Namib desert exhibits astounding plant, insect and animal life that have uniquely adapted to this age-old landscape of sand. The best known desert plant is the Welwitschia mirabilis, a unique species that has commanded the attention of botanists worldwide since is was first recorded in 1859.
The Atlantic Ocean exhibits interesting marine excursions and fishing opportunities.
Swakopmund offers beautiful sights and buildings; Marine Memorial, War Memorial, Woermannhouse, Swakopmund Railway Station, State House, Swakopmund Art Association Gallery, jetty, lighthouse, National Marine Aquarium, Swakopmund Museum and many, many more attractions.
